AUBURN, Ala. – Makayla Epps scored 20 points, but a late Kentucky rally came up short as the No. 7 Wildcats were upset by Auburn 66-61 on Sunday at Auburn Arena.
Kentucky led 45-42 with 9:27 left in the game before Auburn went on a 7-0 run to take a four-point lead. The Wildcats fought from behind to tie the game twice, at 49-49 and at 57-57 with 2:09 remaining.
But Auburn was able to keep Kentucky at bay with clutch baskets and four late free throws by Brandy Montgomery, who led all scorers with 27 points.
Two Wildcats had double-doubles in the game. Evelyn Akhator had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Alexis Jennings added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Kentucky (11-1, 0-1 SEC) was unable to set the school record for best start, having to settle for a tie with 11 straight wins to open the 2015-16 campaign.
The Wildcats shot just 39 percent from the field while committing 26 turnovers. Kentucky also missed six free throws in the game.
Kentucky returns to action on Thursday, hosting Alabama at Memorial Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on the SEC Network.
