Damerau in Contention at Landfall Tradition after First Round

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Kentucky women’s golf senior Cylia Damerau returned to her 2014-15 form with her best round of the season Friday at the opening 18 holes of the Landfall Tradition.
Damerau, who entered the 2015-16 season with Kentucky’s best returning stroke average from last year, carded her best round of the fall with a tournament-opening 74. Her overall score of 2-over par puts her in a tie for 28th, seven shots behind individual leader Isabella Dilisio (Notre Dame).
With a score of 19-over par, UK sits in 16th place – ahead of No. 38 North Carolina – with 36 holes left to go over the weekend at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. No. 2 Duke leads the Landfall Tradition at 1-under par, but the Wildcats are just six shots removed from the top 10.
The tournament will resume Saturday morning at 8:30 with the second round. The champion will be crowned Sunday. Fans can continue to follow along with live scoring of the Landfall Tradition at golfstat.com.
Damerau put together by far her best round of the season with a strong back nine Friday. Entering the final nine holes at 3-over par, Damerau carded three birdies in a six-hole stretch for a 1-under back nine.
Sophomore Isabelle Johansson is seeking her fourth straight top-50 finish to open the 2015-16 season and is currently in a tie for 53rd at 5-over par. She made an uncharacteristic seven bogeys Friday but softened the damage with two birdies.
Sophomore Grace Rose and junior Jordan Chael are tied for 62nd at 6-over par with a combined five birdies. Freshman Anna Hack posted an 81 in her opening round and is in a tie for 87th place.
The Landfall Tradition marks the final tournament of the fall for the Wildcats, who have not shied away from playing the best teams in the country to start the season. The Landfall Tradition has been no different for UK with 12 of the teams in the field ranked in Golfstat’s top-50 rankings, including five in the top 25 and two in the top 10.
This weekend’s tournament is being held at the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall, located in Wilmington. Located along the Intracoastal Waterway, the rolling layout of the Dye Course is playing at par 72, 6,157 yards. The Dye Course was the host site of the NCAA Division I Women’s Collegiate Championship for the second time in 2010 after hosting previously in 1995.
