Landfall Tradition Marks Final Fall Tourney for UK Women’s Golf
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The 2015 fall season will come to a close this weekend for the Kentucky women’s golf team at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
The Wildcats will face yet another strong field Friday through Sunday at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. Twelve teams in the 18-team field are ranked in Golfstat’s top 50.
Play begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. with teams teeing off on the first and 10th holes.
“We are excited to be in Wilmington this week for the Landfall tournament,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “It’s one of the best events in the country and one that we have been looking forward to playing in for a while. This golf course has been host to the national championship and I believe it’s one that will set up well for our team.
“We face another great field this week, which gives us a great opportunity to play against some of the best teams and players in the country. The team is motivated and determined to end the fall on a strong note and we look forward to the first round tomorrow.”
The Tournament
If the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational is the toughest field in the country during the 2015-16 golf season, the Landfall Tradition isn’t far behind.
Hosted by UNC Wilmington and entering its 14th season, the Tar Heel Tradition annually draws some of the top teams in the country, especially from the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference. In addition to 12 teams in Golfstat’s top-50 rankings, five are ranked in the top 25 and two are included in the top 10.
No. 2 Duke and No. 8 Alabama highlight this year’s field along with defending champion Wake Forest, which has captured the Landfall Tradition crown three times in the last eight years, and defending individual champion Ashley Holder of UCF.
The Course
The Country Club of Landfall, located in Wilmington, N.C., features two courses. This week’s tournament will be played on the Pete Dye Course.
Located along the Intracoastal Waterway, the rolling layout of the Dye Course will play at par 72, 6,157 yards.
The Dye Course was the host site of the NCAA Division I Women’s Collegiate Championship for the second time in 2010 after hosting previously in 1995.
The Lineup
Borst will use the same five golfers she used two weeks ago at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in sophomores Isabelle Johansson and Grace Rose, senior Cylia Damerau, junior Jordan Chael, and freshman Anna Hack.
Johansson has been Kentucky’s best golfer to date with three top-50 finishes in all three appearances this season.
Chael owns the best round (71) and best finish (tied for 10th) of the season for the Wildcats, both having taken place at the season-opening Minnesota Invitational.
Rose has appeared in all but one tournament for Kentucky in her career as a Wildcat, while Hack, a freshman, will make her third straight appearance.
Damerau entered the 2015-16 season as UK’s leader with the leading returning stroke average.
What’s at Stake
Finish strong. Build momentum. That’s the goal this weekend for the Wildcats before breaking for the winter.
With more than three months off following this week’s Landfall Tradition, the idea for Kentucky is to build some positive vibes for the offseason and come back strong in late January. Ultimately, that’s when Kentucky’s most important part of the season begins.
The whole goal for Kentucky in 2015-16 is to build on a school-record five straight NCAA regional appearances and break through with an NCAA Championship appearance. That goal is still very much in play.
