Cats Continue Improvement at Wednesday Practice

Kentucky’s preparation for Florida passed its midpoint on Wednesday.

The Wildcats, according to defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot, are handling themselves well so far.

“We had a good practice today,” Eliot said. “Good full-padded practice. We got to have those every Wednesday, got to be physical, be sharp. Got to make sure that we’re continuing to get better, our fundamentals, and developing our young players. We were headed that direction today in practice.”

That’s been the theme throughout the preseason and UK’s 2-0 start to 2015. By no means have the Cats been perfect, but their energy has been consistent and their improvement continual.

Eliot has certainly seen that out of his defense.

UK has allowed close to 450 yards per game, but the Cats have overcome opponents moving the ball by forcing five turnovers and allowing only two touchdowns in seven red-zone drives and 9-of-29 third-down conversions.

“I think we’re running to the ball,” Eliot said. “I think guys are flying around and playing with effort and getting to the football. That’s step one. You’ve got to get them playing hard, and I’ve seen that in the first two games.”

Two games and two wins, but the Cats aren’t resting on their laurels.

“I think they’ve done well,” Eliot said. “The good thing about this league is no week is easy. We’re moving on. We’re gearing up for this week and we know the challenges ahead of us and we know our kids have embraced that and had that type of mentality in practice.”
