Women’s Soccer Hosts UNC Greensboro, Toledo at The Bell

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of
Kentucky women’s soccer team returns to The Bell Soccer Complex this weekend
for a pair of night matches against UNC Greensboro, and the Toledo Rockets. The
match against UNCG will kick off at 5 p.m. ET as part of a doubleheader with
the men’s soccer team, and Sunday’s match with Toledo will commence at 6 p.m.
ET.

Kentucky capped off its opening weekend of
action with a 1-1-0 record, collecting a 1-0 win over No. 20 Washington before
falling in a 2-0 decision to the San Diego State Aztecs on Sunday night. Courtney
Raetzman scored the game-winning goal on Friday night, scoring straight off a
corner kick in a tailing ball in the box that wiggled its way across the line
in the fracas. Raetzman is UK’s second-leading returning scorer from 2014,
after scoring six goals in UK’s Sweet 16 campaign a year ago.

With Courtney Raetzman scoring directly off of
a corner kick, Friday night’s result provided an unusual event. In 2014, UK’s first
win of the season came off of a direct corner kick from Cara Ledman against
Seattle U in the first OT. That marks back-to-back years in which UK’s first
win of the season came off direct corner kick goals, one of the rarest plays in
the sport.

UNC Greensboro enters this weekend’s slate of
matches 0-2-0 on the season, with two losses last week to Loyola Chicago (3-2, OT)
and at High Point (2-0). Candice Forbes had a team-high three points on the
weekend, with a goal and an assist. Zoe Fishman scored the Spartans only other
goal to record her first two points of the season. This weekend’s matchup marks
the fourth overall meeting between UNCG and Kentucky, with UK holding the 2-1-0
lead in the all-time series. The last time that UK faced UNCG was in the 2012
Tropical Smoothie Invitational at the UK Soccer Complex, when Kentucky won a
2-0 decision to take the title.

Toledo is 1-1-0 after one weekend of action,
recording a double-overtime win over Detroit, 3-2 on Friday in its season
opener before falling 3-0 to Notre Dame on Sunday in South Bend. The Rockets
got two goals from Isa Echeverri on four shots last weekend, and another goal
from Sophie Pohl. The Rockets are coming off of a 7-11-2 season in which they
went 4-6-1 in Mid-American Conference play. This weekend’s match-up marks the second all-time
meeting between UK and Toledo. Kentucky played Toledo in the Buckeye State in
2013, winning by a 2-1 decision thanks to two second half goals by Stuart Pope
and Zoe Swift in the program’s first-ever meeting.

Kentucky will face Louisville in the annual
“Battle of the Bluegrass” on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET at the Bell Soccer
Complex. All fans who wear blue will be admitted for just $1, and also receive
free rally towels upon admittance into the match. Fans will also be treated to
free UK soccer trading cards as UKWS looks to break an attendance record. For
any youth teams interested in attending, email Alyx Ayer of the UK marketing
department at Alexandra.ayer@uky.edu.
