Kendra Harrison Reaches Semifinal at World Championships

Update – 7:40 a.m. – Aug. 27. — Kendra Harrison was disqualified under the false start zero tolerance rule and did not advance past the semifinal.

The result doesn’t diminish her historic year in which she went undefeated in short hurdles races during the collegiate season, won two NCAA Championships, two SEC Championships, became one of the best tandem (100m and 400m hurdlers in history), and is a finalist for the Bowerman Award.

Update – 11:55 p.m. – Aug. 26. — Kendra Harrison automatically advanced to the World Championships semifinal round in the 100m hurdles on Thursday in Beijing.

Harrison ran 12.90 for second place in her heat to move into Friday’s semifinal.

She will look for a place in the final in Friday’s race, which is scheduled for 7:25 a.m. ET.

LEXINGTON. Ky. – Kendra Harrison’s World Championships will begin in earnest on Thursday as she begins her pursuit of a medal in the 100-meter hurdles with the preliminary heats at the Beijing Olympic Stadium.
Harrison will get her first taste of senior international competition starting at 11:15 p.m. ET on Wednesday (Thursday in Beijing). She will have a preferred lane in the first prelim heat, and will need to finish in the top four of nine in that race, or have one of the next four fastest times overall to advance to Friday’s semifinal round.
Harrison is considered a medal contender in the event – which is one of the more anticipated races of the championships – as she has the third fastest time this year among athletes entered in the field, and finished ahead of the top seed – Sharika Nelvis – in the USATF final in June.
Harrison’s prelim will be part of the Thursday morning session, which will be streamed by Universal Sports, with the broadcast starting Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET.
Last month, in her first ever race outside the U.S Harrison finished second to Nelvis in the Monaco Diamond League Meeting with a time of 12.52, just 0.02 outside her PB. She defeated the likes of reigning World Champion Brianna Rollins and reigning USATF Champion and 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Dawn Harper-Nelson.
Kentucky track and field head coach Edrick Floréal’s Team USA is in solid position in the medal count just past midway through these World Championships.
Team USA is in second position in the medal count with nine to Kenya’s 11. Floréal’s men have claimed four of those medals. Team USA leads the placing table with 111 points, to Kenya’s 108.
