Alex Meyer Earns First Big-League Call up

June 26, 2015

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky great Alex Meyer has been called up to join the Minnesota Twins for the first time in his professional career, the Twins announced on Thursday night.

A native of Greensboro, Ind., Meyer will become the 31st former Kentucky player to reach the big leagues, including the sixth former UK standout to earn MLB service time in 2015, including Andrew Albers (Blue Jays), Joe Blanton (Royals), Collin Cowgill (Angels), Trevor Gott (Angels) and Chris Rusin (Rockies).

Meyer, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound right-handed pitcher has pitched in 17 games with the triple-A Rochester Red Wings, making eight starts. His last nine appearances have come in relief, with Meyer allowing just one earned run over that stretch, spanning 15 innings pitched.

The Twins return to action at 2:10 p.m. ET on Friday at the Milwaukee Brewers.

In 2014, Meyer tied for the triple-A lead with 153 strikeouts in 130.1 innings, owning a 7-7 record and a 3.52 ERA in 27 starts. In his minor league career, Meyer has a 24-19 record with a 3.43 ERA in 85 games and 76 starts, striking out 453 in 394 innings.

Ranks as MLB.com’s No. 23 prospect in minor league baseball entering the season, Meyer was selected in the first round, No. 23 overall, by the Washington Nationals, the second-highest draft pick in program history.

He finished the year as the SEC leader in strikeouts, strikeouts looking (48), innings pitched per game (7.21), complete games and complete-game shutouts. Meyer ranked second in the SEC in innings pitched, ninth in ERA, eighth in wins, second in strikeouts per game (9.8) and fifth in opponent batting average.

With 110 strikeouts in 2011, Meyer became the 10th player in program history to fan 100 or more in a season, ranking eighth in UK single-season history. Meyer, who ranked No. 9 in the NCAA in strikeouts in 2011, owned a 13-12 career record in 211.1 innings, striking out 253 the fifth-best total in UK career annals.

A two-time SEC Pitcher of the Week and a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week in 2011, Meyer finished the year on a blistering pace, totaling six consecutive quality starts and owning a 4-1 record and a 1.97 ERA in those outings. Meyer owned 10 quality starts in 2011, posting a 6-3 record and a 1.88 ERA in his quality outings. Over his final three starts, Meyer went 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA, including wins over No. 1 Vanderbilt, Georgia and No. 4 Florida.
