Final-round pairings
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Every Kentucky women’s golfer improved their score on day two of the Southeastern Conference Championship as the Wildcats bettered their first-round score by 10 strokes in the second round of the league tournament.
Led by another strong round from junior Cylia Damerau, UK shot a 9-over-par 297 in the second round and sits in 12th place overall at 28-over par. Facing a field that features eight teams ranked in the top 20 and four in the top 10, just 12 shots separates Kentucky from sixth place, putting the Wildcats in prime position to move up the leaderboard on the final day of the tournament.
No. 13 Texas A&M leads the tournament at 6-under par. No. 2 South Carolina (3-over par), No. 14 Tennessee (8-over par), No. 17 Vanderbilt (9-over par) and Alabama (12-over par) round out the top five, but all will need low rounds on Sunday to catch the Aggies.
After an opening-round 75, Damerau just missed out on her third even- or under-par round of the season with a 1-over-par 73 on Saturday. Damerau provided one of the highlights of the tournament when she eagled the par-5 18th hole to get back to even par for the round. It was one of just three eagles the Legacy Course at the Greystone Golf & Country Club has allowed all weekend.
The junior from Switzerland followed the eagle with a birdie on No. 1 to get to red numbers, where she remained the rest of the round until bogeying No. 10 and No. 11, her final two holes of the day. Overall she’s at 4-over par and in a tie for 25th.
Sophomore Haley Mills matched Damerau in round two with a 1-over 73. With four more birdies on Saturday, Mills is tied for third for the most birdies in the tournament with eight total. The Texas native is right behind Damerau at 5-over par for the tournament and in a tie for 29th place.
Junior Sarah Harris improved her score by nine strokes in the second round with a 3-over-par 75 and sits in a tie for 61st place.
Freshmen Isabelle Johansson and Grace Rose, playing in their first SEC Championship, continued to play solid golf with a pair of 76s. Johansson is at 9-over par overall and in a tie for 42nd, and Grace is at 11-over par and in a tie for 50th.
The tournament will wrap up Sunday with the final 18 holes at the beautiful par-72, 6,190-yard layout at the Greystone Golf & Country Club’s Legacy Course. The final round will begin at 11 a.m. ET with a shotgun start.
