LEXINGTON, Ky. —
The University of Kentucky men’s tennis team knocked off the No. 52 Auburn Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center by a count of 4-1, earning the Wildcats a first-round bye in the Southeastern Conference Tournament next weekend.
With the first-round bye as the No. 11 seed, UK will face off against No. 6 seed Florida, who is also ranked No. 17 nationally, on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET from College Station, Texas.
Kentucky and Florida played on Friday afternoon in Lexington, with the Wildcats falling short, 4-1. Kentucky captured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three before the Gators got wins in four of the singles matches that were completed to complete the 4-1 win.
On Sunday, Kentucky won the doubles point for the seventh time in its last eight SEC matches, as the Wildcats got wins on courts two and three from Nils Ellefsen/Jerry Lopez and William Bushamuka/Trey Yates.
After the 1-0 lead, it took just under an hour for Beck Pennington to collect a straight-sets win on court one with a 6-2, 6-3 win to make it 2-0 Wildcats.
On court five, Nils Ellefsen easily took the opening set with a 6-2 win, before grinding out a 7-5 win in the second frame to capture the Wildcats third point of the afternoon. Ellefsen was on serve, serving at 4-5 in the second frame, and then held serve before breaking on the deuce point at 6-5 to serve for the match win at 7-5.
The clinching point came on court three, as freshman William Bushamuka broke in the second set at 5-4 up to close out the match on the deciding deuce point and give the Wildcats the 4-1 win over Auburn.
