BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kentucky golfer Tyler `Chip’ McDaniel was tabbed the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week the league office announced on Wednesday. It is the first such honor of McDaniel’s career, and the first for the Cats this season.
McDaniel placed in a tie for 12th at the Schenkel Invitational this weekend. He posted a spring-season low score of 214 and a 7-under par for the tournament.
The Manchester, Ky., native turned in the most impressive round of his young career with a career-low and a team-low final round of 66 (6-under par) to help propel the Wildcats to a fourth place overall finish in the tournament. It was the best finish of the season for the men’s golf team, and McDaniel was one of four players to card an under-par final round.
McDaniel ranks second on the team with a stroke average of 72.62. He has four top-20 finishes on the year, also ranking second on the squad. His eight par or better rounds trails only junior David Snyder.
The Wildcats will return to the links March 29-31 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Invitational at the Bulls Bay Country Club in Awendaw, S.C.
