Mami Adachi Earns Third SEC Freshman of the Week Honors
March 4, 2015
LEXINGTON, Ky. – For a program-record-tying third time this season, University of Kentucky women’s tennis player Mami Adachi has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.
Adachi is the second player in school history to earn three or more league accolades in the same season. She joins Megan Broderick, who was named the conference’s Freshman of the Week three times in 2008. Adachi already became the first player in program history to earn back-to-back Freshman of the Week honors when she was recognized on Jan. 28 and Feb. 4.
A native of Tokyo, Japan, Adachi joined UK at the beginning of the semester and has made an immediate impact in Lexington. To earn her third SEC Freshman of the Week accolade, Adachi helped UK to a 4-3 upset victory over No. 15 Ole Miss in the Wildcats’ SEC opener before a 5-2 victory over Mississippi State on Sunday.
On Feb. 27 vs. the 15th-ranked Rebels, Adachi posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory over No. 109 Mai Kamash. The win put UK within one point of clinching the upset victory, Kentucky’s first over Ole Miss since 2007. On March 1, Adachi downed No. 63 Martina Frantova, 6-3, 7-6 to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead over Mississippi State.
In singles action, Adachi has won 11 consecutive matches, all in straight sets, dating back to Jan. 13.
Paired with Aldila Sutjiadi at No. 1 doubles, Adachi earned an 8-3 win over Ole Miss and an 8-4 victory over MSU. Adachi and Sutjiadi where the first doubles pair to win their matches in both of UK’s contests to open the SEC season.
No. 20 Kentucky returns to action vs. No. 13 Vanderbilt. Originally scheduled for Friday, the contest has been rescheduled due to weather for Tuesday, March 10 at Noon ET.
