CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Kentucky women’s tennis team lost to USC, 4-0 in the consolation round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
The Wildcats (7-3) are making their first ITA Nationals appearance since 2005 and competed against a Trojans team that has four singles players and one doubles pair ranked in the top 50 nationally.
Kentucky continues play at the 16-team, four-day tournament Sunday, where it faces Clemson at 6:30 p.m. ET. The tournament concludes Monday.
UK lost the doubles point to open the match. Mami Adachi and Kelsey Dieters fell, 6-2 to No. 14 Zoe Scandalis and Giuliana Olmos, before USC clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff and Kirsten Lewis.
In singles competition, Dieters suffered a 6-4, 6-1 loss to No. 44 Zoe Scandalis on No. 2 singles and Lewis fell 6-4, 6-2 on court No. 4 to Sabrina Santamaria as USC claimed a 3-0 lead. The Trojans clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win on No. 6 singles, No. 45 Madison Westby over Morin-Kougoucheff.
Nadia Ravita, at No. 1 singles, was trailing a tight match, 7-5, 3-2 to No. 41 Olmos when play concluded, while Adachi held a 5-4 lead in the second set on court No. 3 over No. 48 Gabby Smith after she dropped the first set, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Taylor Lederman won the first set, 6-3 before a 6-1 loss that forced a tiebreaking third set, where she trailed 3-0 at the conclusion of the match.
