Track & Field

Feb. 6, 2015 –

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Keffri Neal remained undefeated this season, and Sha’Keela Saunders continued to show her strength as a triple jumper as each of them were winners on Friday at the “Doc” Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet inside Rector Field House.

Neal cruised to the win in the 800 meters, likely a tune-up before he faces a more elite field next weekend, with a time of 1:49.73. He has won all of the races he has entered this season, including an 800m against an elite field two weeks ago, and as part of a distance medley relay at the season-opening Kentucky Invitational, when he ran a 1:47 800m split.

Saunders, who on Thursday was listed as “receiving votes” on the latest Bowerman Award Watch List – largely for her NCAA-leading long jump mark and her status as the defending NCAA Silver Medalist in the outdoor long jump – continued to show strength in the triple jump.

She easily won the VT Elite Meet triple jump, with a solid mark of 41’1.75″/12.77m to win by nearly a foot and a half. Saunders’ personal-best triple jump of 42’11.75″/13.10m, recorded two weeks ago ranks No. 6 in the nation.

Solid Finishes by Wildcats on Friday at VT Elite Meet

•    Nick Anderson ran a PR time of 7.86 en route to a second-place finish in the men’s 60m hurdles.
o    Anderson’s event coach, 1996 110m Hurdles Olympic Gold Medalist Allen Johnson, not coincidentally owns the Rector Field House record of 7.50.

•    Leah Nugent placed second in the women’s 60m hurdles with a time of 8.27, after she ran 8.24, which is .04 off her PR in the prelims.
o    Nugent, one of the nation’s best hurdlers, placed second in the open 200m with a PR time of 24.22, competing on her old stomping grounds as she transferred to UK from Virginia Tech in 2013.
o    Jacklyn Howell placed sixth with a time of 8.44, after running 8.43 in the prelims.

•    Dominique Booker finished as the top collegian and second overall in the 60m with a season-best time of 7.42. Keilah Tyson was third overall in 7.43, also a season best.
•    Katy Kunc ran a PR time of 4:53.16 in the mile, while Michelle McKinney was sixth in 4:57.47.
•    Lou Styles ran a PR in the men’s mile to finish seventh with a time of 4:09.49.
•    Rebecca Famurewa placed fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 65’9.5″/20.05M.

Kentucky will continue at the VT Elite Meet on Saturday, with field events starting at 11 a.m. ET.
