Adachi Earns Second Straight SEC Freshman of the Week Honors
Feb. 4, 2015
LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the second consecutive week, University of Kentucky women’s tennis player Mami Adachi has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.
Adachi’s back-to-back Freshman of the Week honors marks the first time in program history a UK player has earned SEC weekly honors twice in a row. Adachi is also the third player in school history to earn two or more league accolades in the same season.
A native of Tokyo, Japan, who joined UK at the beginning of the semester, helped the Wildcats extend their winning streak to seven matches with a 3-0 singles record in wins over Penn State, No. 46 Illinois and Northern Kentucky. Adachi has claimed victories in each of her last seven singles contests without dropping a set.
Adachi opened the week with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Penn State’s Kimberley-Ann Surin on Jan. 31 that gave UK its first lead after dropping the doubles point. Three days later, Adachi beat Illinois’ Jericka Boone, 6-4, 7-5 to clinch a 4-0 win for the Wildcats. In the second match of Feb. 3rd’s doubleheader, Adachi beat NKU’s Rehenna Morehart, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles action, Adachi and Kelsey Dieters moved up to the No. 1 court and earned a 6-2 win over Hailey Shanahan and Danielle Donahue.
Kentucky travels to Charlottesville, Va., for the ITA National Indoor Championships. The Wildcats make their first appearance in the 16-team tournament since 2005.
