Homestand Begins for Women's Tennis Saturday vs. Penn State

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coming off back-to-back upset wins at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, the No. 26 Kentucky women’s tennis team returns home to host Penn State Saturday at Noon, ET at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.

The Wildcats (4-1) have won four consecutive matches, including its last two that sent them to the ITA National Indoor Championships for the first time since 2005.

Penn State comes to Lexington with an 0-3 mark, after back-to-back 5-2 defeats to Old Dominion and William and Mary on Jan. 24-25 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend event.

Last weekend, which saw UK record wins over No. 21 Rice, 4-0, and No. 32 Arizona State, 4-2, Mami Adachi earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors. Adachi recorded two singles wins and continued her undefeated streak in doubles to begin her career with a win over Rice.

Jan. 25’s win came in comeback fashion, after UK lost the doubles point and lost four of the six first-set singles contests. Kentucky stormed back though and claimed second-set victories on five courts, including two that resulted in Wildcat wins to give them a 2-1 lead. Aldila Sutjiadi gave UK its first point with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court No. 2. Mami Adachi finished soon after with a 7-6 (2), 6-0 win on court No. 4 that put Kentucky ahead for the first time in the match. Taylor Lederman responded to a 6-3 first-set loss with a 6-3, 6-4 win on the sixth court to give the Wildcats a 3-1 edge. After Kelsey Dieters suffered a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 loss on court No. 3, Nadia Ravita clinched the win for Kentucky with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win on court No. 1.

In the win on Jan. 24, Senior Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff and junior Kirsten Lewis opened the match with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Attention turned to Dieters and Adachi as they also came out victorious, winning their doubles match 6-2. In singles competition, Sutjiadi was the first to strike and add another point for the Wildcats, winning her match 6-3, 6-1. Adachi increased Kentucky’s lead to 3-0 after a 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 4 singles match, and Dieters followed with a win of her own, 6-4, 6-3. The Shelby TWP, Mich., native’s win clinched the 4-0 win for the Wildcats and completed the ITA Kickoff first-round upset.
