Erin, Wisc. – On the site of the 2017 U.S. Open, the Kentucky men’s golf team fired a 289, the lowest round of the year, to conclude play at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate on Tuesday. All six Wildcats shot 2-over par or lower during the final round.
“We played better today, but still gave away too many shots,” UK coach Brian Craig said. “Erin Hills was gettable today, and we were close. This team is a work in progress, and we need to get some guys healthy. However, I firmly believe in this team. We will get better.”
Kentucky turned in its best performance of the 2014-15 season with a 289, three strokes lower than its previous best. All six players were within two strokes of par, a feat not yet achieved this season.
Junior Harrison Greenberry earned the low round of the day with a 1-under, 71. Freshman Cooper Musselman fired an even-par, 72. Senior Will Bishop and junior David Snyder each notched 1-over par, 73s. Freshman Tyler ‘Chip’ McDaniel and junior Todd McDaniel turned in 2-over par, 74s.
Tyler McDaniel led UK’s finishers with a 21st place finish – a mere stroke shy of turning in his third-consecutive top-20 finish of the year. Snyder concluded the tournament in 31st, while Todd McDaniel was 36th. Greenberry improved from 47th to 39th. Musselman and Bishop both concluded the tournament in 42nd.
As a unit, Kentucky finished the tournament in eighth place, improving its position following each day of competition. UCLA captured the tournament title.
The Wildcats will conclude fall action Oct. 27-28 at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational. The two-day tournament will be played on the Quail Valley Golf Course in Vero Beach, Fla.
