Final Stats
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team equalized with just 15 minutes remaining at Ellis Field in College Station, Texas, against No. 9 Texas A&M, but saw the Aggies score with just 52 seconds left in regulation to collect the 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon.
“First off, congratulations to Texas A&M,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said. “They are such a fantastic team and extremely dynamic in the attacking third. We have the upmost respect for them and everything that G (Guerrieri) has done with that program. We clearly played the best half of our season today in the second half, and Texas A&M brought out the best in us. We will learn, grow and get better from today and move forward from it.”
Texas A&M got the scoring started in the 23rd minute as Aggie junior midfielder Janae Cousineau scored her first goal of the season off a set piece to put TAMU up 1-0. Cousineau was played a ball in from the left side off a free kick from 35 yards out that was a teasing ball in the box from Meghan Straight. The ball took one bounce inside the box and then was poked past Ayanna Parker to christen the scoring.
The first half concluded at 1-0, with Texas A&M leading the shots category, 7-5, and had five shots on goal to the Wildcats one. Parker made four saves, a new career high for saves in a half.
UK’s best scoring chance in the opening frame came in the 19th minute as Jade Klump had the keeper beat at the top of the box, but on a twisting ball, couldn’t put home the goal, as the Aggie defense made a great back save, clearing the ball off the line and keeping UK off the scoreboard.
The Wildcats would equalize in the 77th minute as Arin Gilliland, the MAC Hermann Award finalist, whipped in a cross from the left side about 25 yards from goal to the far post with her left foot, and it was placed into the net for her sixth goal of the season. The cross was placed perfectly by Gilliland atop the six yard box and the Wildcats were able to push enough pressure on A&M goalkeeper Renee McDermott to call her off and push the ball into the back of the net.
With the match even at 1-1, the Aggies found the golden goal in the 90th minute with just 00:52 seconds left in the match, as Bianca Brinson scored from the right side off side netting on a miss-clearance by the Wildcats back line. The ball fell right to her boot on the edge of the 18 and was framed up perfectly for a rocket that sailed past Braun for the game-winner.
Kentucky next faces No. 14 South Carolina on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET at the Bell Soccer Complex in a stand-alone weekend, as there will be no match on Sunday for UK. The match will be live on SEC Network+ with Neil Price and J.D. Stephenson on the call.
