Track & Field

July 3, 2014

EUGENE, Ore. – Three Wildcats will look to extend their freshman seasons at the United States Junior Track and Field Championships, which will take place July 5-6 at Historic Hayward Field.

Madison Jacobs will represent the UK women’s team in the discus, while Nick Anderson will compete for the UK men’s team in the 110-meter hurdles and Justin Kretchmer will try his luck in the high jump.

The two highest-finishing athletes in each of the individual events this weekend will earn a spot on Team USA for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships, which will also take place at Hayward Field later this month. The top two finishers will have to meet the mandated qualifying standards.

Athletes must be 19 years-old or younger to compete at the Junior Championships.

USATF.tv will stream the meet live beginning with the first running event of each day. Saturday’s broadcast begins at 5:50 p.m. ET and Sunday’s at 5:45 p.m. ET

Anderson will be the first Wildcat to compete, and the only one to see action on Saturday, as he will take to the track for the first round of the 110m hurdles at 8:25 p.m. ET. Anderson concluded his collegiate season strong with a fourth place finish at the Southeastern Conference Championships. He also qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round.

Madison Jacobs will begin Sunday’s competition for UK. She was a SEC All-Freshman Team selection in multiple events in addition to claiming the Conference Discus Silver Medal and qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

Kretchmer was the SEC Indoor High Jump Bronze Medalist, and had a season-best clearance of 7-0.25/2.14m. He will begin competition at 7:30 p.m.

Only athletes aged 16, 17, 18 or 19 on 31 December 2014 (born in 1995, 1996, 1997 or 1998) may compete at the USA Junior Championships.
