LEXINGTON, Ky. – After advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season, and accumulating 14 wins in 2013, the University of Kentucky women’s soccer team has released its 2014 fall schedule, featuring 10 games at the newly-renovated UK Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky.
“Obviously, we are very excited to announce our fall schedule for the fall season,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said. “I have always believed that you schedule a tough group of teams in addition to our conference schedule in order to best prepare us for the NCAA Tournament. We have set ourselves up for the best success with this schedule and feel good about this group of games.”
For the first time in program history, the Wildcats will open the season on Pacific time, as Kentucky will start the season with a 10-day road trip to the Pacific Northwest to play an exhibition match against the Portland Pilots, and then open up the regular season against women’s soccer powerhouses Washington, on Aug. 22 and at Seattle University Sunday, Aug. 24.
“Since I was hired at Kentucky, I have always wanted to start off the season on the west coast, and do this road trip to start the season,” Lipsitz said. “More than just playing three amazing opponents, this will be a good time for the team to grow and mature as a group while attending some professional games and getting to sightsee.”
The home slate of games will open on Friday, Aug. 29 against Francis Marion in Lexington in the inaugural game of the newly renovated UK Soccer Complex. Following the Friday match against FMU home opener, the Wildcats will welcome in the Ohio Bobcats to the UK Soccer Complex on Aug. 31. The Bobcats are coached by former UK assistant coach Aaron Rodgers, who served four years under Lipsitz at Kentucky.
The annual UK-Louisville rivalry game will be played on Friday, Sept. 5 in Louisville. The Wildcats will be looking to win their fourth-straight match over UL, and second-straight win in the Derby City over the Cardinals.
The The 2013 Ohio Valley Conference champions,ns, Morehead State, will come to Lexington to play the Wildcats on Sunday Sept. 7, as former UK head coach Warren Lipka returns to the UK Soccer Complex for the first time.
The completion of a home-and-home with Toledo will be capped off this season on Sept. 12 at the UK Soccer Complex before wrapping up the weekend against Pepperdine on Sept. 14.
After the eight-match non-conference slate ends, the Wildcats travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to open the 2014 Southeastern Conference season, which will once again feature an 11-match schedule, with two teams left off of each teams’ schedules. The Wildcats will not match up against Tennessee or Vanderbilt in the regular season.
The home SEC slate will open up on Sept. 26 and 28, as the Wildcats will welcome the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Auburn Tigers to Lexington.
UK will then return to the road on Oct. 2 for a Thursday night match with the Missouri Tigers before making the trek to College Station, Texas, for a Sunday night affair with the Texas A&M Aggies.
Kentucky will return home for a three-match home stand from Oct. 10-19 beginning with the South Carolina Gamecocks on Oct. 10. After a week off, the Ole Miss Rebels and Florida Gators come to Lexington on Friday Oct. 17 and Sunday Oct. 19.
On Oct. 24, Kentucky will travel to the Bayou to face the LSU Tigers, where UK took three points on a scorching Sunday afternoon back in 2012 with an overtime winner from Courtney Raetzman. UK will close out its final full weekend of the regular season at Georgia on Oct. 26
The regular season will conclude on Thursday, Oct. 30 as Kentucky will host Alabama.
The top-10 teams in the SEC standings will qualify for the 2014 SEC Soccer Tournament, which will be held in Orange Beach for the 12th-straight season.
