LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coming off a two week break from tournament competition, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team begins play in the NCAA East Regional in Tallahassee, Fla., this weekend. The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins Thursday, May 8 and wraps up Saturday, May 10 at the SouthWood Golf Club. Tee times begin at 7:45 a.m. ET all three days off holes No. 1 and No. 10.
Last Time Out:
Kentucky is coming off an eighth-place tie in the 2014 Southeastern Conference Championship held in Hoover, Ala. Sophomore Cylia Damerau recorded her second top 20 finish of the season by placing 18th with a 9-over par, 225. Senior Liz Breed carded an 11-over par, 227, to tie for 24th, while freshman Haley Mills posted a 13-over par, 229, to tie for 31st. Sophomore Sarah Harris and freshman Alessandra Walker tied for 53rd at 18-over par, 234.
UK has won one tournament this season, while recording four top-five finishes as a team. Breed leads the team with a 73.89 season scoring average with Mills closely behind at 74.04. Mills was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team last week after a strong first campaign in Lexington.
About the NCAA Regionals:
The NCAA Women’s Golf Championship is made up of three regionals that each consist of 24 teams and six individuals. The two other 2014 regional sites include the Central Regional at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., and the West Regional at the Tumble Creek Club at Suncandia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash. This marks the fourth straight postseason appearance for Kentucky under the direction of head coach Golda Johansson Borst. The Wildcats placed 12th in the 2013 East Regional, 17th in the 2012 Central Regional and 20th in the 2011 East Regional.
The Course:
Named one of the Top 35 New Courses in America by Golf Magazine and among America’s Best New Courses by Golf Digest, SouthWood wows golfers from across the country. SouthWood was also named One of the Top 50 Courses for women by Women in Golf Magazine and voted Tallahassee’s Best Golf Course by Tallahassee Magazine. Masterfully designed by PGA Tour legend, Fred Couples, and his renowned design partner, architect Gene Bates, SouthWood Golf Club is an upscale public facility nestled among rolling hills, pastureland and ancient oak trees draped in Spanish moss. SouthWood Golf Club is designed to provide enjoyable and challenging golf experiences for players of all levels. The course has served as the home course for both the Men’s and Women’s Florida State University golf teams since it opened. The course will feature a par-72 (36-36), 6,257-yard setup.
The Tournament Field:
The 24-team regional features five Southeastern Conference teams, including the 2014 SEC Champions Vanderbilt. Auburn, Georgia and South Carolina will also represent the league in the East Regional. Along with Vanderbilt, the field boasts 12 conference champions: Duke, Stanford, Pepperdine, Tulane, Louisville, East Tennessee State, Campbell, College of Charleston, Troy, Murray State, Seton Hall and Alabama State. The remainder of the field consists of UCF, Virginia, NC State, Florida State, Baylor, East Carolina and Texas State.

“We are looking forward to getting back on the road this week,” Borst said. “We have prepared well and I know the girls are ready to get back on the course. They also finished up their finals today, so now we just have this tournament to focus on. This week is all about having patience, controlling our emotions and having fun. If we do that, then good things will come.”
