HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Competing in one of the toughest tournaments in the country, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team wrapped up first round action of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Friday with a team score of 23-over par, 307, to place the Wildcats in a tie for 14th. Second round action begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. ET.
Duke sits atop the team standings at even par, 284, while No. 14 Vanderbilt (+9), No. 8 Alabama (+9), No. 13 South Carolina (+10) and North Carolina (+11) complete the top five. Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow leads all players at four-under par, 67.
Rounding out the rest of the team standings were No. 7 Stanford (+13), No. 4 Arkansas (+13), No. 21 LSU (+13), No. 5 Oklahoma (+14), No. 20 Wake Forest (+15), Tennessee (+20), Virginia (+21), No. 25 Auburn (+21), Furman (+23), No. 6 Arizona State (+26) and Georgia (+31).
“Today was a challenge for us,” said Kentucky head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “I believe we were prepared, but unfortunately the course got the best of us. We have lots of golf left and I know we will be ready to get back after it tomorrow morning.”
Freshman Haley Mills led the Wildcats on Friday with a two-over par, 73. The Tyler, Texas, native is tied for 14th with 36 holes to play. Tied for 45th is sophomore Cylia Damerau at five-over par, 76. Damerau played a strong front-nine as she had a one-under par, but the final nine holes were not as kind. She finished the day at five-over par, 76.
Sitting a stroke behind Damerau is fellow sophomore Sarah Harris at six-over par, 77. After 18 holes, Harris is tied for 53rd. Freshman Alessandra Walker and senior Liz Breed will look to regroup after a tough start to the tournament. Walker turned in a 10-over par, 81, while Breed finished at 11-over par, 82. The two are tied for 75th and 77th, respectively.
