MOBILE, Ala. – Another tournament and another top five finish for the University of Kentucky men’s golf team, as the Wildcats wrapped up their first spring tournament in second place at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. Kentucky finished the 54-hole tournament at even-par, 864.

The Wildcats turned in a final round team score of one-under par, 287, highlighted by senior Stephen Powers’ three-under par, 69. Powers posted back-to-back rounds of 69 to finish the tournament tied for third place. His final score of three-under par, 213, marks a season best and the third place finish is also a season best. It is his second top 10 finish of the season. The Naperville, Ill., recorded the lone eagle of the tournament by a UK player on the 13th hole.

“This is a solid way to start the spring season even though we would have liked to have earned the win,” said UK head coach Brian Craig. “We are definitely making progress and it looks like our new indoor facility is paying dividends. I give credit to Coach (Jessie) Mudd who I asked to come up with some creative ways to train in our new building. The guys have responded well to the weekly training regimen and it certainly worked. In particular, our short game was better than I can remember at this time in year’s past.”

Auburn won the team title with a six-under par, 858, while Memphis (+1), Georgia State (+2) and Middle Tennessee State (+6) complete the top five. Wake Forest’s Clancy Waugh won the individual title with a six-under, 210.

Rounding out the rest of the team standings were Ole Miss (+11), Chattanooga (+14), Wake Forest (+16), South Alabama (+20), Illinois State (+22), Texas State (+28), Davidson (+30), Akron (+37), Southern Mississippi (+40) and Samford (+45).

“I’m proud of all the guys, but especially Stephen Powers and David Snyder,” Craig said. “Stephen led the way with an excellent final 36 holes and David gave us a lot considering he did not have his good game this week.”

Entering the final day of competition, Snyder was tied for third, but managed to turn in his highest score of the tournament in the final round. The Somerset, Ky., native recorded a four-over par, 76, to give him a final score of two-over par, 218. Snyder still tied for 14th; giving him his fourth top 15 finish of the season.

Two Wildcats, senior Ben Stow and junior Will Bishop wrapped up the competition tied for 25th with a five-over par, 221. Stow saved his best round for the final day with a two-under par, 70 to climb up the leaderboard and just missing a top 20 placing. Bishop turned in a scorecard of three-over par, 75.

Senior Cody Martin registered a one-over par, 73, in the final round to place him in a tie for 38th and seven-over par, 223 for the tournament. Martin finished with a team-high 10 birdies for the entire competition, including nine of the 10 in the final two rounds.

The 54-hole USA Individual Tournament also wrapped up on Tuesday at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course. Sophomore Harrison Greenberry tied for 25th in the event at 21-over par. Freshman Stephen Stallings finished 28th at 25-over par and freshman Hager Collins placed 33rd with a 43-over par.

UK will next travel to San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, for the Querencia Cabo Collegiate held March 2-4 at the Querencia Golf Club. For more information on the University of Kentucky men’s golf team please visit UKathletics.com and follow on twitter @UKmensgolf.
