Parker Breaks 60H Record, UK Wins Six Events at Season-Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Kentucky won six events, a school record was broken, and multiple Wildcats produced career-best performances as the indoor track and field season kicked off with a bang at the Hoosier Open on Friday inside Indiana’s Gladstein Fieldhouse.
“I was pleased with the overall performances of both our returners and our newcomers,” head coach Edrick Floréal said. “The likes of Kayla Parker, Kendra Harrison, Bradley Szypka and Terence Boyd were each very impressive in their individual event victories. Justin Kretchmer also had a strong showing”
Parker opened the 2013-14 track and field season with an eye-opening performance for the second year in a row, this time breaking a 14-year old UK record. The senior defended her Hoosier Open 60-meter hurdles title with a personal-best time 8.24, besting Lutisha Shittu’s previous school record by one 100th of a second. Parker’s time is the fastest in the country so far this season.

Harrison had a head-turning Wildcat debut herself, as the junior transfer won both the events she entered. She became the fifth-fastest Wildcat in school history over 60m, with a time of 7.41. Later in the evening she won the 300m (37.96).
In fact, 10 of the top 11 finishers in the 300m entered were Wildcats. Morganne Phillips, who won the same event in facility-record time last season, was second (39.44) and Dominique Booker (unattached) was third 39.52.
Booker and Phillips placed second and fifth respectively in the 60m with times of 7.42 and 7.74, while freshman Alisha Adair was third with a time of 7.64.
Szypka won the Hoosier Open shot put for the second year running as his top throw, 18.82m/61’9″, fell just half and inch short of his PR.
Boyd made a statement of his own, beginning his junior season with an indoor personal record 7.29m/23’11” to win the long jump.
Keffri Neal won the 1,000m for the second-consecutive year, with nearly a three-second personal-best time, 2:22.82.
Justin Kretchmer made a nice UK debut, winning the high jump with a top clearance 2.10m/6’10.75″. Kretchmer’s clearance tied him for No. 9 on the UK all-time performers’ list. Ibn Short was second (2.05m/6’8.75″) and Ryan Ratliff was fourth (2m/6’6.75″).
UK’s next competiton will be the home opening Kentucky Invitational inside Nutter Field House on January 17, 2014.
