LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will host the Ohio State Buckeyes in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.
This is Kentucky’s third straight year hosting the NCAA Tournament and also the first time in program history that the Wildcats have made the postseason three consecutive seasons. In 2012, Kelli Hubly scored the game-winning goal in overtime against UT Martin to record UK’s first-ever NCAA Tournament win.
Friday night’s match with Ohio State will be the sixth all-time meeting between the two sides, with Kentucky holding the 4-0-1 lead in the series. The last time Kentucky and OSU met was in 2006, where UK took home a 2-0 win.
Kentucky finished the season 13-6-1 and 7-4-0 in Southeastern Conference play. The Wildcats won two matches against ranked teams, as Kentucky knocked off No. 10 West Virginia on the road, 4-2, while also beating No. 19 Georgia, 1-0, in Lexington.
MAC Herrmann Award finalist Arin Gilliland leads Kentucky in scoring with 31 points on the year, consisting of 11 goals and nine assists, both team highs. The junior has played over 1,700 minutes on the pitch for UK and has two hat tricks against Alabama and Tennessee.
Ohio State enters Friday’s match 10-6-3 overall and 4-5-2 in Big 10 competition. The Buckeyes, like UK, received an at-large bid into the field of 64 on Monday afternoon.
Seventeenth-year head coach Lori Walker, who once employed current Kentucky head coach Jon Lipsitz from 2001-04 in Columbus as an assistant coach, leads the Buckeyes into Friday night’s match. Ohio State finished 43rd in the final RPI and is 9-7-2 in its seven appearances in program history in the NCAA Tournament.
