LEXINGTON, Ky. – After winning all four races last week, University of Kentucky freshman swimmer Brandon Flynn was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Flynn, who posted his first collegiate victory Oct. 24, was named the SEC’s Male Freshman Swimmer of the Week for the first time in his career. In the two-day event against Missouri and Southern Illinois in Carbondale, Ill., Flynn won all four events he competed in.

“He’s really worked hard, and this honor is very well deserved,” UK head coach Lars Jorgensen said. “He’s one of the smartest swimmers I’ve ever seen. He has a really high swimming IQ and swims his races correctly. He is a real pleasure to have on our team and is great to coach. He is a great kid, and I think he has a bright future.”

Flynn recorded his first win as a Wildcat in the men’s 400 individual medley on Oct. 24. A 3:58.11 was good enough for the win by 1.09 seconds over the Mizzou’s Igor Kzlovskij. Eight events later, Flynn returned to the water to win the men’s 500 freestyle. A finish of 4:31.75 gave him the win by a 0.20 margin.

On Oct. 25, Flynn won the 1,000 yard freestyle in 9:21.94 before leading the way as the UK men finished one-two-three in the 500 yard freestyle. Flynn came in first in the 500 yard event with a time of 4:32.26, ahead of teammate Matt Roman and Scott Crosthwaite.

The Freshman of the Week honor is the third weekly award for the Kentucky swimming and diving team this season. Junior swimmer Christina Bechtel and senior diver Greg Ferrucci were honored with the season’s first SEC Athlete of the Week awards on Oct. 15. Bechtel was named the SEC Female Swimmer of the Week, while Ferrucci earned SEC Male Diver of the Week honors.

UK returns to the road Friday against Indiana and Tennessee in Bloomington, Ind. The tri-meet between the SEC and Big Ten teams will begin at 2 p.m. ET on Nov. 1.
