LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky rifle team notched its second win of the weekend on Sunday, knocking off No. 8 Memphis 4693-4644.
“Overall I was pleased with the team’s scores today,” UK head coach Harry Mullins. “The team worked hard today and we are showing ourselves that we have the skills to get good numbers in various ways.”
Kentucky held a narrow two-point lead after kneeling, but increased the lead to 12 after prone, 1570-1558. The Wildcats held a 2325-2303 lead entering air rifle.
Senior Emily Holsopple led the way in smallbore with a 584, while freshman Sonya May was one point behind with a 583. Senior Aaron Holsopple posted a 580 in smallbore.
Jonathan Pinkel’s 579 in smallbore was a new personal best.
A strong air rifle performance pushed the Wildcats to victory, with three counters breaking 590. Emily Holsopple posted a team-best 594, with sophomore Connor Davis shooting a 593 and May delivering a 592.
Junior Ethan Marne shot a personal best 588 in air rifle. Freshman Heather Kirby recorded a 589.
“Emily had a good day with solid performances in both guns, along with Sonya May,” Mullins said. “I’m proud of Ethan and Jon, each delivering new personal bests.”
The eighth-ranked Tigers were led by Dan Hermsmeier in both guns, shooting a 581 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle.
“We had a little trouble at the start but came through in the clutch,” Mullins said. “I feel that once we tweak some of the things we need to work on then we will get some of the things we want. We just need to stay focused on what we are doing and what we are trying to accomplish. Next week will be another good test at TCU, they are a very good opponent.”
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, traveling to Fort Worth, Texas to face TCU.
