PALO ALTO, Calif. – The 21st-ranked University of Kentucky women’s golf team completed the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate Friday afternoon with a seven-over par, 291, to put the Wildcats in eighth place at the Stanford Golf Course.

Second-ranked USC sits atop the standings at eight-over par, 276, while No. 19 Washington (-2), No. 9 Stanford (-1), Oregon (-1) and No. 12 Pepperdine (+1) complete the top five. USC’s Sophia Popov leads all players at five-under par (66).

Rounding out the rest of the team standings were No. 20 Northwestern (+2), No. 1 UCLA (+4), No. 21 UK (+7), California (+8), UC Davis (+9), No. 24 Auburn (+10), San Jose State (+10), No. 11 Vanderbilt (+12), Washington State (+17), Georgia (+20) and Oregon State (+20).

“We had a good day for most of the round today,” said Kentucky head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “Unfortunately, we lost a few shots coming in, but the girls did a lot of great things today. We will build on the positives from this round and we look forward to getting back out there tomorrow.”

Cylia Damerau led the Wildcats with four birdies on the afternoon en route to a first round score of one-over par, 72. Freshman Haley Mills also recorded a first round score of one-over par, 72. Damerau and Mills currently sit in a tie for 22nd.

Senior Liz Breed sits one shot behind Damerau and Mills after a two-over par, 73, round of 18. Breed is tied for 35th.

Freshman Alessandra Walker recorded a three-over par, 74 on Friday to place her in a tie for 45th. Sophomore Sarah Harris turned in a scorecard of seven-over par, 78, which puts her in a tie for 72nd. Harris had tough back nine where she registered two of her three double-bogeys.

Playing as an individual, freshman Megan Kinney rounded out the Wildcat performers with a 10-over par, 81, which places her in a tie for 82nd. Kinney is playing in her first tournament since the season-opening “MO”Morial Invitational.

The teams return to the course for second round action Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. ET.
