MEMPHIS, Tenn.- The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team had success during the qualifying rounds at the USTA/ITA Regionals hosted by University of Memphis.

Stephanie Fox had a great day winning both qualifying singles rounds and will compete in the main draw singles. Fox beat both of her opponents in only two sets, with only one opponent winning more than one game in a set.

“It was a long day,” Fox said. “I’m happy with the way we fought on every court in every match.”

CeCe Witten had little trouble in taking down her Evansville opponent, Mina Milovic in the first round of qualifiers. She claimed both sets of the match, 6-2 and 6-1. Witten fell to Miami’s Chloe Heerden in the final round of qualifying singles. Heerden claimed the first set 6-1, but Witten fought her way back to win the second set 6-4 and force a tiebreak. Heerden won the final set 6-2 and won the match.

Kirsten Lewis and Fox participated in the qualifying doubles. They dominated the first round beating Claire Mulvadi and Jovana Pecovski from Chattanooga 8-2. In the finals of the qualifiers, the UK tandem had a tough time pulling ahead of Miami’s Ana Rajkovic and Heerden, but came out with the win, 8-7 (5).

“It feels amazing to win that match,” Lewis said. ” I’m proud of how we fought together when we were down.”

Fox and Lewis will join three other Kentucky duos in the main draw doubles action. They will compete on Saturday at 9 a.m. ET.

“I’m ready to have a great day,” head coach Carlos Drada said. ” The ladies are prepared and will compete again tomorrow all day.”
