ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – After 36 holes of play, the University of Kentucky men’s golf team sits in second place at the Wolf Run Invitational at 20-over par, while three Wildcats rank in the top 20.
Kentucky started the day slowly by turning in a first round score of 15-over par, but regrouped to shoot five-over on the final 18 holes of the day. Illinois takes a 15-stroke lead into the final round at five-under par, followed by UK and Auburn (+23).
“What a day for the Wildcats,” said Kentucky head coach Brian Craig. “We had about the worst start you can imagine in the first round, but fought all day long to stay competitive. We played much better in the second round, but still left way too many shots out there. We need to play better tomorrow and finish strong this week.”
Through two rounds, the team standings are filled out with Ohio (+30), Minnesota (+31), Indiana (+33), Wisconsin (+35), Miami (OH) (+36), Toledo (+46), Oakland (+51), IUPUI (+58), Illinois State (+63), IPFW (+77) and Northern Illinois (+84). The final 18 holes begin Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET.
Senior Cody Martin turned in first and second round scores of one-over par, 71. He enters the final day tied for fifth place at two-over par.
Stephen Powers recorded the low round of 18 with a second round of three-under, 68. He improved upon a first round score of six-over, 77. Powers is tied for eighth overall at three-over par.
Senior Ben Stow rounds out the Wildcats ranked in the top 20 in a tie for 19th at seven-over par. Stow registered rounds of 76 (five-over par) and 73 (two-over par).
“I am very proud of Stephen Powers and David Snyder for handling adversity quite well today,” Craig said. “They showed great resiliency.”
Rounding out the team lineup was junior David Snyder and sophomore Harrison Greenberry. Snyder sits just outside the top 20 in a tie for 22nd at eight-over par. Snyder posted rounds of 74 and 76 on the day. Greenberry is in 68th place at 22-over par with rounds of 84 and 80.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Todd McDaniel is tied for 54th at 17-over par. McDaniel posted a 14-over par, 85 on the first 18 and a three-over, 74 on the final 18.
