Sept. 22, 2013
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Florida struck for goals in each half and held on to post a 2-0 win over the Kentucky men’s soccer team in the finale of the Gamecock Classic, hosted by South Carolina, on a pleasant Sunday afternoon at Eugene Stone Stadium.
Kentucky (2-4) faced off with another talented team in South Florida in its finale of the Gamecock Classic, after a loss to Ivy League power Dartmouth on Friday night. South Florida (2-1-3) got goals in the 15th and 54th minutes to post the win, after a 1-1 draw with South Carolina on Friday night.
The Wildcats finished with advantages in shots and corner kicks for the second consecutive game in Columbia. UK had an 11-6 advantage in shots and an 8-2 mark in corner kicks. The Bulls managed just three shots on goal, with two connecting for goals and one saved by a UK defender.
The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday with the Conference USA opener, hosting UAB on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.
South Florida got on the board in the 15th minute, as the ball was played down the far sideline and crossed into traffic inside the 18-yard box. Marcus Epps found it after a pair of deflections, firing a shot across the goal mouth and into the side netting at the far post, just out of reach of a diving Van Arsdale.
In the 54th minute, South Florida added to its lead for a two-goal margin. After a USF player injury that left the clock stopped for several minutes, USF scored 11 seconds into the restart. Lindo Mfeka took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that sailed into a UK defender, with the ball deflecting into a barren spot in the goal, past a diving Van Arsdale at the far post.
