BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the fifth consecutive season the Kentucky volleyball team was tapped to appear on a primetime national telecast it was announced by the Southeastern Conference on Wednesday. Kentucky will travel to Georgia on Oct. 23 before a national audience on ESPNU at 6 p.m. ET.
It marks the fifth consecutive season that the ESPN Family of Networks has selected the Wildcats to appear on national television. This will be the first such matchup between UK and Georgia.
A season ago, UK swept No. 25 Tennessee 3-0 in front of a national audience at home in Memorial Coliseum.
In addition to the ESPNU match, the Wildcats were selected for the opening conference match on SportsSouth. UK will take on Florida in Gainesville for a 6:30 p.m. ET tilt. The two squads were selected as the preseason 1-2 finishers by the league’s coaches in a preseason poll.
Every ESPNU match will be available on WatchESPN. SportSouth matches will also be made available on ESPN3.
ESPNU is available in 75 million homes. SportSouth telecasts will be distributed to over 30 million homes in the FOX regional footprint.
Additional television broadcasts for Kentucky will be announced at a later date. UK returns 10 letterwinners from a squad who marched on to its second consecutive Sweet 16 appearance in 2012 including second-team All-America selection Whitney Billings. The Wildcats have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in eight consecutive seasons and are one of just 14 teams in the nation to achieve that feat.
UK begins the 2013 season at the Long Beach State tournament. UK takes on Florida State, Illinois and the host 49ers in the three-day season-opening event beginning Aug. 30.
Kentucky’s Memorial Coliseum will play host to the NCAA Regionals Dec. 13-14. UK is one of four sites selected for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight matchups with one team advancing to the Final Four in Seattle, Wash., from the Lexington Region. This marks the second time in three seasons Memorial Coliseum will host this premier volleyball event.
