Hayes and Dykstra Lead UK Track & Field to NCAA Top-20 Finish

EUGENE, Ore. – The Kentucky men’s track and field team placed 18th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships behind top-5 finishes from both Keith Hayes and Raymond Dykstra on Saturday at Hayward Field.
Kentucky finished with 15 points. The Wildcat men earned their best finish at the National Championships since 2010 when they placed 13th with 18 points.
“Our men’s team’s top-20 NCAA Championship performance along with gallant efforts from Keith Hayes and Ray Dykstra are strong building blocks for the future of our team,” head coach Edrick Floreal said. “We look forward to welcoming our freshman class into the fold as we continue to grow toward our ultimate plans.”
Keith Hayes placed fourth in his first NCAA 110m hurdles final crossing the finish line in 13.40 seconds with a 3.8 meters per second wind at his back. The time was the second-fastest all-conditions performance of the senior’s career, bettered only by his school record NCAA Semifinal time of 13.32w.
Raymond Dykstra’s season-best javelin throw, which went 72.49 meters / 237 feet 10 inches, was good for fifth place. Dykstra was sixth nationally as a freshman last season.
Dykstra’s initial attempt traveled 71.46m / 234’05”. That mark was good for second in the first preliminary flight, and made him the No. 5 qualifier into the final.
He improved to 72.49 meters on his first of three additional throws in the final, moving into fourth place after the fourth round. He did not improve on the next two throws, but remained fourth overall when just one thrower behind him in the standings had yet to make a final attempt.
Ohio State’s Bill Stanley was that thrower, and he launched the javelin 72.79m / 238’9″ on his final toss, to pass Dykstra in the standings by less than a foot.
Andrew Evans picked up Kentucky’s other six points on Friday with a bronze medal performance in the discus.
Florida and Texas A&M tied for the men’s team NCAA Championship with 53 points. Kansas won the women’s NCAA Title with 60 points. The Kentucky women’s team did not score at the NCAA Championships.
Rondel Sorrillo scored all 18 points for UK during the 2010 NCAA Championships, which also held at Hayward Field.
Texas A&M’s Wayne Davis II won the 110m hurdles with the second-fastest NCAA Championship time ever, 13.14w.
Texas A&M’s Sam Humphries, was US Olympic Trials Javelin Champion at Hayward Field in 2012, won the javelin with a top throw 77.95m / 255’9”.
The top eight finishers in each event earned points toward the overall team score. The points were assigned as follows: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
