LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky swimming team added another signee to the class of 2013 with the addition of Mallory Mathias out of Leeds, Ala. Mathias joins an already impressive crop of incoming freshman for the 2013 class that the Kentucky swimming and diving staff is looking forward to for the fall.
“We’re excited to add Mallory to our already exceptional fall class,” said interim head coach Lars Jorgensen. “Her work ethic and attitude are unmatched. She is a phenomenal student and a talented distance swimmer. Mallory posted lifetime best times at the end of this season telling us she’s on her way to being an impact SEC competitor. She had many excellent choices when determining what college to attend. We are thrilled she chose UK.”
Mathias chose the Wildcats over the University of Alabama, the state in which she is ranked the fourth-best overall swimmer according to CollegeSwimming.com.
A distance freestyle specialist, Mathias swims the 500-freestyle (5:00), 1000-freestyle (10:09) and 1650-freestyle (17:02). Mathias attends Briarwood Christian School in Alabama and swims under head coach Dan Rozick at Swim Birmingham YMCA at the club level. In addition to her career as a swimmer, Mathias was also a standout cross country runner in high school.
Mathias also was awarded the Presidential Non-Resident Scholarship from the University of Kentucky, a prestigious scholarship that will cover the cost of non-resident tuition for up to four years of undergraduate study.
After Kentucky added 11 swimmers in the early signing period last fall, Mathias becomes the 12th member of UK’s 2013 recruiting class.
