BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf posted an impressive round on day one of the SEC Championships finishing tied for third at 18-over-par. The Wildcats sit just three shots off the lead from LSU who is pacing the field.
“Today was a tough day for everyone,” head coach Golda Johansson Borst said. “We had some challenging scoring conditions, but the girls hung tough and stayed patient throughout the round. We did a lot of great things and, even though we gave up some shots at the end of the round, we are still in the mix for the next two days.”
Freshman Sarah Harris was the highlight of the day for UK. Harris finished the day tied for first overall, shooting 1-over-par, 73 on the afternoon. She recorded a team-high three birdies, including back-to-back on hole 15 and 16.
“I played well today,” Harris said. “I didn’t do anything too special, I just tried to stay patient and made sure I stuck to my game plan. This course can jump out and get you if you’re not careful, so for me it is all about managing it.”
“I am very proud of Sarah,” Borst said. “She played smart today and when things got tough she stayed patient and continued to stay positive. She needs to stick to her game plan, play her game and great things will happen!”
Junior Liz Breed was 4-over on the day, tallying two birdies on holes 15 and 17. Breed is tied for 12th overall.
Senior Betsie Johnson is tied for 27th at 6-over-par after posting 11 pars and one birdie on the day. Senior Ashleigh Albrecht and freshman Cylia Damerau are tied for 41st at 7-over-par.
