LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky rifle team wrapped up day one of team competition at the Great America Rifle Conference Championships Saturday in Oxford, Miss., shooting a 2329 in smallbore to sit in second behind West Virginia’s 2335.
“We had a solid performance today,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “We feel that there were a couple points left out there but we’re only six points off West Virginia and confident we can make that difference up tomorrow in air rifle.”
Kentucky was led by seniors Henri Junghänel and Heather Greathouse. Junghänel delivered a 586, with Greathouse shooting a 585, the third and fourth best scores of the day.
Junior Emily Holsopple posted the ninth best score of the day, a 581. Junior Aaron Holsopple contributed to the team’s score with a 577.
Petra Zublasing of West Virginia led the individual smallbore field, shooting a 595. Zublasing’s teammate Thomas Kyanko shot the next best score, a 587.
Individually, senior Ed Ryznar shot a 578 and senior Stacy Wheatley delivered a 575.
Entering Sunday’s air rifle competition, the order of the field is West Virginia (2335), Kentucky (2329), Nebraska (2312), Army (2297), Memphis (2293), North Carolina State (2290), Ole Miss (2286) and Navy (2275).
Competition will wrap up Sunday with air rifle relays scheduled to being at 9 a.m. ET. Live stats will be available on olemisssports.com.
