KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Kentucky diving team got the 2013 portion of their schedule underway Thursday afternoon in the Tennessee Diving Invite. After taking nearly a month off from competition, the Wildcats got back in the pool as Kentucky divers competed against an impressive field of teams on the first day of the Invitational.
Thursday saw the men compete on 1-meter spring board. Senior John Fox had a solid day after picking up a seventh-place finish in the preliminaries. In the finals, Fox scored a 316.90 to put himself in third place where he would finish for the day.
Junior Greg Ferrucci, who has earned SEC Diver of the Week honors already this season, competed but did not finish in the top-12 to move on to the finals. Head coach Ted Hautau said Ferrucci competed despite an illness.
The women competed on the 3-meter board on Thursday afternoon, and Kentucky picked up two top-10 finishes. Sophomore Christa Cabot earned fifth place with a final score of 304.95 and freshman Rebecca Hamperian earned a ninth-place score of 265.80.
Kentucky divers have found quite a bit of success already this season with both men and women divers earning high finishes in their early season meets. Thursday was no different. However, Hautau felt they were a bit rusty in their first competition since the holiday break.
“Christ Cabot, Rebecca Hamperian, and John Fox were consistent today and competed well to make the finals,” said Hautau. “Our other divers did some really good things too but had some misses. Overall, I was pleased with our performances.”
In day two of action at the UT Invite, the men and women will switch events with the men competing on the 3-meter board while the women will switch over to the 1-meter. Friday’s action gets underway at 11:30 a.m ET. On Saturday, both the men and women will compete on the platform. Saturday’s action gets going at 10:30 a.m. ET.
