LEXINGTON, Ky. – Behind a 6-4, 6-2 win over David O’Hare of Memphis, University of Kentucky men’s tennis junior Tom Jomby advanced to the singles quarterfinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Ohio Valley Regional Championships on Sunday afternoon.
“Tom is playing very good tennis,” UK head coach Cedric Kauffmann said. “I am excited to see how he will finish the tournament.”
Jomby will take on Connor Glennon of the Memphis Tigers on Monday afternoon, at 12 Noon ET. The Wildcats junior will then play at 3:30 p.m. ET if he were to advance to the singles semifinals.
In addition to the singles final, Jomby and doubles partner Kevin Lai won their semifinal doubles match over David O’Leary and Joe Salisbury of Memphis by a score of 8-2. The duo will play for the ITA doubles final on Monday against the No. 1 overall seed of the draw, Tennessee’s John Collins and Mikelis Lieibtis.
“Tom (Jomby) and Kevin (Lai) are playing great. It will be a tough battle tomorrow for the title, but I know they will be up for the challenge.” Kauffmann said.
“With work and mental toughness, I know this team can be one of the best in the country by the year’s end.” Kauffmann said.
Senior Anthony Rossi suffered a tough defeat Sunday, falling in a tight three-set match 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 to Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt. Rossi was the No. 1 overall seed in the singles draw, and had an admirable appearance, progressing to the singles round of 16.
“Rossi lost a heartbreaker today. He had some chances to close out the match but his opponent played well. The credit goes to Ryan Lipman and the Vanderbilt coaching staff.” Kauffmann said.
