LEXINGTON, Ky. — In his first year at the helm of the University of Kentucky men’s soccer team, first-year head coach Johan Cedergren has announced a challenging 2012 schedule, with eight games at the UK Soccer Complex and a total of nine contests against 2011 NCAA Tournament teams, highlighting the 18-game slate.
Kentucky will begin its 2012 quest on Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. ET as the Wildcats will travel north for a game against the Dayton Flyers out of the Atlantic 10. UK started off the 2011 season with a win over Dayton 2-0 at the UK Soccer Complex.
UK will compete in back-to-back tournaments as the calendar turns over from August to September. Kentucky will make its way to Columbia, S.C., for a two-game tournament in which the Wildcats will take on Northwestern on Friday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. ET with the concluding game of the weekend set slated to start at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, as UK will face off against the St. John’s Red Storm.
The Wildcats will open the home portion of their schedule on Sept. 7, serving host to the annual UK Invitational. St. Joe’s and Charlotte will travel to Lexington to square off against UK on Sept. 7 and 9 respectfully. Kentucky and St. Joe’s will tangle at 7 p.m. ET with the concluding tournament game set for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
On Sept. 14, UK will continue its annual battle with in-state foe Louisville in a game slated for a 7:00 p.m. ET kick-off. The Wildcats and UL met in a spring game, with Kentucky coming out with an exhibition win.
The Wildcats will travel to Evansville at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 22, before venturing to IPFW on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. ET for a pair of road non-conference tilts as a primer for league action.
The Tigers of Memphis will pay visit to Lexington as Kentucky opens the C-USA portion of its schedule on Sept. 30 for a game at 2:30 p.m. ET start.
Following a dip of in-conference action, the Wildcats will step out of conference for the final time to square off against Indiana on Oct. 3 in Lexington at 7 p.m. ET at the UK Soccer Complex.
UK will then return to conference action against SMU and UAB, both on the road, with games set for Oct. 6 and 13. The game in Dallas, Texas, vs. SMU will start at 8 p.m. ET with the UAB game scheduled for a start time of 8 p.m. ET.
The three-game road trip will finish on Oct. 17 with the Wildcats making the short trip to Huntington, W.Va., to take on the Thundering Herd of Marshall. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
FIU will pay visit to the UK Soccer Complex on Oct. 21. The contest between the Panthers and Wildcats will commence at 5 p.m. ET.
The final road trip of the 2012 regular season will begin in Tulsa, Okla., on Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. ET. UK and the Golden Wave will tangle in the Sooner State in a rematch of a 2011 game in which UK blasted Tulsa 3-0 in Lexington a year ago. UK will then host UCF at the UK Soccer Complex on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. ET.
The regular season concludes inside the friendly confines of the UK Soccer Complex on Nov. 4 as UK will look to tackle the South Carolina Gamecocks at 7 p.m. ET.
The postseason will open up on Nov. 7-11 in Birmingham, Ala., hosted by UAB. The top six teams in the league are invited to the tournament, with the top two teams receiving byes in the first round.
