BERKELEY, Calif. – Kentucky freshman sprinter Keilah Tyson broke the Kentucky freshman 100-meter dash record in the Women’s 100m Dash Championship at the Penn Relays on Saturday, highlighting Kentucky’s final day at the historic meet in Philadelphia.
Tyson finished second in the Women’s 100m Dash Championship with a time of 11.48. Tyson’s time breaks her previous career-best by 0.04 seconds and sets a new Kentucky freshman record in the event. It is the second time this season Tyson has set the UK 100m dash freshman record. Tyson first set it at the Texas Relays with a time of 11.52. Tyson’s new PR of 11.48 is the third fastest 100m dash run in Kentucky history.
Tyson has had an exceptional freshman campaign for the Wildcats. During the indoor season, Tyson set the Kentucky freshman record in the 60m and 200m. During the outdoor season, Tyson again has been impressive, setting freshman records in the 100m and 200m dash.
Freshman Raymond Dykstra finished fourth in the Men’s Javelin Throw Championship at the Penn Relays with a mark of 229-10/70.07m. Dykstra set the Kentucky javelin record earlier this year with a mark of 247-05 at the Texas Relays.
The Kentucky women’s quartet of Julie Nunn, Shiara Robinson, Tamyah Pipkin and Tyson finished seventh in the Women’s 4x200m Relay Championship of America. The Wildcats finished the race in 1:37.17. The Wildcats advanced to the championship of the event after finishing third in their heat Friday and eighth overall out of the 53 teams competing.
Competing in the mile at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., on Saturday, senior Trent Halasek finished 13th with a time of 4:11.69.
At the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday, several Wildcats recorded career-best times and marks.
Sophomore Brandon Bagley ran a pair of career-best times in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles. Bagley finished second in both races, clocking a 14.58 in the 110m hurdles and a 53.53 in the 400m hurdles. The Elizabethtown, Ky., native ran a 14.44 in the 100m hurdles at the Border Battle Kentuckiana meet, but was aided by wind 2.5. His time of 14.58 is the ninth fastest in program history.
Junior Ben Mason also ran two career-best times Saturday at the Bellarmine Classic. Mason won the 200m dash with a time of 21.44, and finished second in the 100m dash with a time of 10.86.
In the women’s long jump, freshman Brittany Britt set a career-best mark of 17-08.00/5.38m to finish seventh. Britt’s jump breaks her previous career-best mark by 3.75 inches.
In the men’s long jump, freshman Todd Nibbs leaped a career-best 20-06.25/6.25m to finish in 10th. Nibbs also competed with fellow freshman Ryan Ratliff in the men’s high jump, where they both bowed out after clearing 6-04.00/1.93m.
Kentucky will conclude a busy weekend of action Sunday at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. The Wildcats will compete in the men’s and women’s 800m and 1,500m runs, as well as the men’s 3,000m steeplechase and men’s 5,000m run.
