PALO ALTO, Calif. – Led by a first-place performance in the men’s discus championship by sophomore Andrew Evans, the Kentucky men’s and women’s track and field teams had a great day Friday at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.
Evans won the men’s discus championship with a throw of 185-06/56.56m. Evans has led the Wildcats all season in the discus, with his career-best throw – and the seventh-best throw in UK history – coming at the Texas Relays earlier this season (188-10). Evans won Friday’s discus by six inches.
Freshman sprinter Keilah Tyson also had a great day, winning the third heat of the women’s 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in a blazing 11.57. Tyson’s time was just 0.05 seconds behind her career-best, which is also the fastest 100m dash by a freshman in Kentucky history. Tyson’s time was the fourth fastest overall at the meet, and qualifies her for Saturday’s College Women’s 100m Dash Championship. That race will start at 3:35 p.m. ET.
After finishing 11th in the 4x100m relay on Thursday with a time of 45.86, the Wildcat quartet of Tamyah Pipkin, Tyson, Julie Nunn and Kayla Parker raced again Friday in the event, coming in first-place with a time of 45.34. The time is just 0.07 seconds behind the UK season-best 4x100m time.
Kentucky, led by Nunn, Shiara Robinson, Pipkin and Tyson, finished eighth in the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 1:36.37. By finishing in the top eight, the Wildcats have qualified for Saturday’s 4x200m Relay Championship of America race at 2:25 p.m.
Freshman Bradley Szypka narrowly missed out on his season-best mark in the men’s shot put, finishing 10th with a throw of 54-05.50/16.60m. Sophomore Isiah Kent threw his best mark in the shot put this season, eclipsing his previous best mark by a quarter of an inch with a 12th-place throw of 51-04.50.
Freshman Terence Boyd finished seventh in the men’s long jump with a mark of 23-06.25/7.17m.
The first Penn Relays was held April 21, 1895. Today, the meet is the longest uninterrupted collegiate track meet in the country and has had more athletes run at it than at any single meet in the world.
Boyd and fellow freshman Raymond Dykstra will close out the Penn Relays Saturday with the men’s triple jump and men’s javelin, respectively. Boyd will compete at 9:00 a.m., and Dykstra will throw at 11:00 a.m. As previously mentioned, Tyson will also compete Saturday in the championship of the women’s 100m dash ,the Wildcats will race in the championship of the 4x200m relay and Kentucky’s 4x400m relay team is an alternate for that event’s championship.
Senior Trent Halasek will also compete Saturday, but he will be in Berkeley, Calif., at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Halasek will compete in the Don Bowden mile race.
On Sunday at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., Kentucky will compete in the men’s and women’s 800m and 1,500m runs, as well as the men’s 3,000m steeplechase and men’s 5,000m run. Sophomore Allison Peare will race in the women’s 800m, and Halasek, freshman Keffri Neal and sophomore Robert Scharold will race in the men’s 800m. Sophomores Matt Hillenbrand and Adam Kahleifeh, and senior Josh Nadzam will run in the men’s 1,500m. Junior Megan Wright will go in the women’s 1,500m. Junior Luis Orta, the 2012 SEC Men’s Indoor Runner of the Year, will compete in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase and fellow junior Walter Luttrell will run in the men’s 5,000m.
A complete tentative schedule of when and where Kentucky’s track and field student-athletes will compete is listed below. All event times and student-athletes competing in those events are subject to change. Times listed are eastern.
