LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky men’s and women’s track and field teams started a busy weekend Thursday with day one of the Penn Relays, held at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Senior thrower Jennifer Svoboda highlighted the day for the Wildcats in the women’s shot put.
Svoboda had a strong showing in the women’s shot put. The Howells, Neb., native finished fifth with a season-best throw of 50-10/15.49m. Svoboda’s career-best mark in the event came in 2008 when she threw a 51-11.75 in Columbus, Ohio.
Senior Samantha Stenzel finished in a tie for fourth in the women’s pole vault with a mark of 11-11.75/3.65m. Stenzel passed on the opening height of 10-11.75, and then cleared the next two height progressions of 11-05.75 and 11-11.75 on her first attempts. Stenzel finally bowed out at 12-05.50.
The Kentucky women’s 4x100m relay team of Tamyah Pipkin, Keilah Tyson, Julie Nunn and Kayla Parker finished second in its heat and 11th overall with a time of 45.86. They will compete again in the 4x100m on Friday at 1:10 p.m. ET.
The first Penn Relays was held April 21, 1895. Today, the meet is the longest uninterrupted collegiate track meet in the country and has had more athletes run at it than at any single meet in the world.
Five field events, two individual races and one relay will highlight day two of the Penn Relays for the Wildcats.
Sophomore Isiah Kent and freshman Bradley Szypka will get things started Friday at 11:15 a.m. with the men’s shot put. Kent is also tentatively scheduled to compete in the men’s discus at 2:45 p.m. Fellow thrower Andrew Evans will look to break his career-high discus mark of 188-10, the seventh-longest in school history, at 1:30 p.m. Senior Terri-Ann Grant, who currently holds the fourth-best high jump mark in the SEC, will compete at 1:45 p.m. The final field event of the day for Kentucky will take place at 3:30 p.m. as freshman Terence Boyd competes in the men’s long jump.
On the track Friday, Tyson will race in the women’s 100m dash at 3:30 p.m., and Parker will race in the women’s 100m hurdles at 3:50 p.m. Tyson will be looking to add to her already sterling freshman campaign. The Norfolk, Va., native has set four freshman records at UK, including two outdoor records. Tyson set the 100m freshman record at the Texas Relays with a time of 11.52.
Kentucky’s 4x200m relay team will go at 2:10 p.m.
Boyd and fellow freshman Raymond Dykstra will close out the Penn Relays for Kentucky on Saturday with the men’s triple jump and men’s javelin, respectively. Boyd will compete at 9:00 a.m., and Dykstra will throw at 11:00 a.m.
Senior Trent Halasek and junior Walter Luttrell will also compete Saturday, but will be in Berkeley, Calif., at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Halasek will run in either the men’s 800m or mile, and Luttrell will race in the mile.
On Sunday at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., Kentucky will compete in the men’s and women’s 800m and 1,500m runs, as well as the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. Sophomore Allison Peare will race in the women’s 800m, and freshman Keffri Neal and sophomore Robert Scharold will race in the men’s 800m. Sophomores Matt Hillenbrand and Adam Kahleifeh, and senior Josh Nadzam will run in the men’s 1,500m. Junior Megan Wright will go in the women’s 1,500m. Junior Luis Orta, the 2012 SEC Men’s Indoor Runner of the Year, will compete in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.
A complete tentative schedule of when and where Kentucky’s track and field student-athletes will compete is listed below. All event times and student-athletes competing in those events are subject to change. Times listed are eastern.
