Track & Field

April 25, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky men’s and women’s track and field teams are splitting squads this weekend, attending three meets that span the country. Kentucky men’s and women’s field athletes, sprinters and hurdlers will compete at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia from Thursday-Saturday, while UK distance runners will go to the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., on Saturday and the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sunday.

The first Penn Relays was held April 21, 1895. Today, the meet is the longest uninterrupted collegiate track meet in the country and has had more athletes run at it than at any single meet in the world.

Thursday at the Penn Relays, Kentucky will compete in one individual race, two relays and four field events.

Freshman Devinn Cartwright and junior Shiara Robinson will get things started at 10:00 a.m. ET with the women’s 400-meter hurdles. Robinson ran the seventh-fastest 400m hurdles time in school history earlier this year at the Florida Relays.

At 1:00 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., Kentucky will compete in the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay, respectively.

In the field Thursday, freshman Joanne Imbert will compete in the women’s high jump, while junior Shelby Kennard and senior Samantha Stenzel will compete in the women’s pole vault. Kennard and Stenzel are currently tied atop Kentucky’s all-time pole vault records, clearing 12-08.00 at the Southeastern Conference Championships last year. Senior Jennifer Svoboda, who holds the fifth-best shot put mark in UK history, will look to break that record Thursday, and sophomore Kayla Parker will go in the women’s long jump.

Five field events, two individual races and one relay will highlight day two of the Penn Relays for the Wildcats.

Sophomore Isiah Kent and freshman Bradley Szypka will get things started Friday at 11:15 a.m. with the men’s shot put. Kent is also tentatively scheduled to compete in the men’s discus at 2:45 p.m. Fellow thrower Andrew Evans will look to break his career-high discus mark of 188-10, the seventh-longest in school history, at 1:30 p.m. Senior Terri-Ann Grant, who currently holds the fourth-best high jump mark in the SEC, will compete at 1:45 p.m. The final field event of the day for Kentucky will take place at 3:30 p.m. as freshman Terence Boyd competes in the men’s long jump.

On the track Friday, freshman Keilah Tyson will race in the women’s 100m dash at 3:30 p.m., and Parker will race in the women’s 100m hurdles at 3:50 p.m. Tyson will be looking to add to her already sterling freshman campaign. The Norfolk, Va., native has set four freshman records at UK, including two outdoor records. Tyson set the 100m freshman record at the Texas Relays with a time of 11.52.

Kentucky’s 4x200m relay team will go at 2:10 p.m.

Boyd and fellow freshman Raymond Dykstra will close out the Penn Relays for Kentucky on Saturday with the men’s triple jump and men’s javelin, respectively. Boyd will compete at 9:00 a.m., and Dykstra will throw at 11:00 a.m.

Senior Trent Halasek and junior Walter Luttrell will also compete Saturday, but will be in Berkeley, Calif., at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational. Halasek will run in either the men’s 800m or mile, and Luttrell will race in the mile.

On Sunday at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., Kentucky will compete in the men’s and women’s 800m and 1,500m runs, as well as the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. Sophomore Allison Peare will race in the women’s 800m, and freshman Keffri Neal and sophomore Robert Scharold will race in the men’s 800m. Sophomores Matt Hillenbrand and Adam Kahleifeh, and senior Josh Nadzam will run in the men’s 1,500m. Junior Megan Wright will go in the women’s 1,500m. Junior Luis Orta, the 2012 SEC Men’s Indoor Runner of the Year, will compete in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.

A complete tentative schedule of when and where Kentucky’s track and field student-athletes will compete is listed below. All event times and student-athletes competing in those events are subject to change.

This week’s action is Kentucky’s final week of competition before the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held this year at the home of LSU in Baton Rouge, La., from May 10-13.
