LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf heads to Fayetteville, Ark. to compete in the 2012 SEC Women’s Golf Championship. The Championship will be held at Blessings Golf Club, home to a par-72, 6,234-yard layout.
Kentucky enters the 2012 Championship after claiming one of the best regular seasons in program history. The Wildcats earned five top-10 finishes in just eight events, including a No. 1 overall finish at the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational. In just head coach Golda Johansson Borst’s second season, the Wildcats have posted a school-record 302.38 scoring average through 24 rounds.
The Championship’s field features stiff competition as the premiere Southeastern Conference boasts eight teams ranked in Golf World’s latest top 25, including three SEC teams in the top six.
Kentucky placed 10th at the 2011 SEC Women’s Golf Championship, shooting a 63-over-par 927. Auburn travels to Fayetteville looking to defend its 2011 Championship while Erica Popson of Tennessee attempts to defend her individual title after shooting a 6-under-par 210 at the 2011 Championship in Auburn, Ala.
Junior Betsie Johnson led the Wildcats in the 2011 Championship with a 10-over-par 226, placing 23rd. Junior Heather Lott finished in a tie for 38th with a 16-over-par 232 while junior Ashleigh Albrecht finished in a tie for 46th at 19-over-par 235 and senior Ashlee Rose finished at 23-over-par 239, tied for 52nd.
The Wildcats look to add to their impressive 2011-12 campaign by capturing the program’s first SEC Women’s Golf Championship. Albrecht enters postseason play with a Kentucky record 74.67 scoring average through 21 rounds while Johnson’s scoring average of 76.33 places seventh all time and sophomore Liz Breed’s 76.44 scoring average places eighth in Kentucky history.
Kentucky will tee off from the 12th tee box in 10-minute intervals. Rose will lead off the Wildcats at 9:30 a.m., followed by Lott, Johnson, Breed and finally Albrecht at 10:10 a.m. All times are Eastern.
