LEXINGTON, Ky. – A slew of freshmen on the Kentucky men’s and women’s track and field teams impressed Saturday at the “Texas Roadhouse” Border Battle “Kentuckiana” meet in Louisville, Ky., as freshmen Keilah Tyson and Terence Boyd each set UK all-time top-10 times/marks.

Tyson was at it again Saturday. Tyson, who entered the Border Battle as the owner of two UK freshman indoor records and one outdoor freshman record, added her name to the list once again. Tyson cruised in the women’s 200-meter dash, taking first-place honors with a time of 23.68. Tyson’s time is the fastest by a freshman in Kentucky track and field history, and the third fastest all-time at UK. Finishing second in the race was fellow freshman Tamyah Pipkin with a time of 24.16.

Boyd had a fantastic afternoon in Louisville. Boyd had a career-best mark in the men’s long jump and triple jump. The Forth Worth, Texas, native leaped 7.43m/24-04.50 in the long jump and 15.25m/50-00.50 in the triple jump. Boyd’s long jump is the fifth best in school history, while his triple jump mark is the eighth best in school history.

As a team, Kentucky competed in the four-team, dual-scored meet, along with Louisville to make up the “Commonwealth” team. The Wildcats and Cardinals faced Notre Dame and Indiana, known as the “Hoosierland” team. In the end, “Hoosierland” came out on top, as the women’s team won 101.50-100.50 and the men’s team won 113-81.

Individually, the Wildcats had a strong meet, setting many career-best and season-best times.

Sophomore Kayla Parker ran a career-best time in the women’s 100m hurdles. Parker won the race with a blazing fast time of 13.72, the seventh fastest in program history. It is the second time this year Parker has run a UK all-time top-10 time in the 100m hurdles.

It wasn’t all about the 100m hurdles for Parker though. In the women’s long jump, Parker had a career-best mark, leaping 5.71m/18-08.75. The fourth-place jump earned the “Commonwealth” one point.

The Wildcats’ 4×100-meter relay team of Julie Nunn, Parker, Shiara Robinson and Tyson set a new season-best mark with a first-place time of 45.28. Kentucky’s time is the fourth-fastest 400-meter relay in school history.

Kentucky performed very well in the men’s discus, finishing first and third in the event and earning the “Commonwealth” team seven points total. Sophomore Andrew Evans won the event with a throw of 55.40m/181-09.00. Fellow sophomore Isiah Kent finished third in the discus with a career-best throw of 51.21m/168-00.00.

Another winner for the “Commonwealth” from the Wildcats was senior high jumper Terri-Ann Grant. Grant cleared 1.78m/5-10.00, to win the event by two inches.

Sophomore Brandon Bagley had a fantastic 110m hurdles. Bagley finished second in the race with a career-best time of 14.44. The time is the ninth fastest in program history. Bagley also ran a season-best race in the men’s 400m hurdles, finishing third with a time of 54.65.

Senior Samantha Stenzel finished third in the women’s pole vault with a season-best mark of 3.76m/12-04.00. Stenzel’s mark earned the “Commonwealth” team two points. Also earning points for the “Commonwealth” in the women’s pole vault was junior Shelby Kennard, who finished sixth with a mark of 3.56m/11-08.00.

In the first ever Border Battle “Kentuckiana” in 2010, Kentucky and Louisville defeated Indiana and Notre Dame. The men’s side won 103-99, while the women’s side won 100-96. Last year, the “Hoosier Land” defeated the “Commonwealth” 103-96 on the men’s side and 104-96 on the women’s side.
