LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team, led by junior Betsie Johnson, moved in to sixth place at the LSU Golf Classic after finishing the second round Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats shot a 15-over-par 303 on their second day in Baton Rouge, La.
“Today was a better day for us and we were able to make up some shots on the field,” said UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “We still have areas that we need to improve on, but overall we are playing solid”
Kentucky currently sits 27 strokes off the lead at 38-over-par 614. Tennessee surged in the second round to force a tie atop the leaderboard with LSU after shooting a one-over-par 289 in the second round. Tennessee and LSU have a 14-stroke lead, sitting at 11-over-par 587 through two rounds. North Carolina and Vanderbilt sit in a tie for third at 25-over-par while Virginia rounds out the top five at 32-over-par 608.
Johnson moved up 27 spots in round two, leaving her tied for eighth entering the final round. A one-under-par 71 sparked by five birdies in the second round puts Johnson at five-over-par 149 on the weekend.
“I am very proud of Betsie, she stepped up big for us today,” said Borst. “Her hard work is paying off and it was just a matter of time before we saw this kind of golf from her.”
Sophomore Liz Breed stayed steady in the second round, improving her first-round score by one stroke with a three-over-par 75. Breed’s three birdies on day two leave her tied for 18th at seven-over-par 151
Junior Ashleigh Albrecht repeated her first round score with a five-over-par 77. Albrecht is tied for 32nd at 10-over-par 154 after sinking three birdies on day two. Junior Megan Moir showed dramatic improvement on day two, shooting an eight-over-par 80, an 11-stroke improvement from day one.
As an individual, junior Heather Lott improved by one stroke on day two, shooting an eight-over-par 80. With one birdie on the day, Lott sits tied for 57th entering the final round. Senior Ashlee Rose finished round two with a 14-over-par 86.
Kentucky will begin the final round of the LSU Golf Classic Sunday at 8:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.
