University of Kentucky freshman men’s golfer David Snyder and junior Chase Parker each shot career-best rounds en route to shooting a combined 9-under par Tuesday in the final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The UK men’s golf team recorded the second lowest round of the day, and surged into a tie for ninth place in its first tournament of the spring season.

Snyder, a Somerset, Ky., native, entered the final round at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course (par 72, 7,160 yards) in a tie for 37th after opening rounds of 3-over-par 75 and 1-over-par 73. On Tuesday, however, Snyder’s game was on point as he registered five birdies to just one bogey. Snyder’s 4-under-par 68 propelled him up the leaderboard to a tie for 10th place, the best finish of his collegiate career, and the best 54-hole total of his collegiate career.

“I want to give a big congratulations to David for earning his first top-10 finish of his young career,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “I look forward to watching him have many more over the next three-and-a-half years of his career.”

Snyder began his round with a bogey on his opening hole, the par-4 10th, which ended up being the second most difficult hole on the course Tuesday. The freshman responded with a birdie on No. 13, a par 5 stretching 559 yards. Snyder would make the turn at even par before coming in with a 4-under-par 32, including three straight birdies on hole Nos. 4-6 to finish with a 4-under-par 68, the best round of his career.

Snyder wasn’t the only UK golfer to succeed Tuesday, as the Wildcats closed out the tournament with a final round of 3-under par, 285. Kentucky’s 285 was the second lowest round of the day, and the fifth lowest team round of the tournament.

“It was great to finish off the even with a solid round today,” Craig said. “This team has great potential and we saw a little bit of it today with Chase Parker and David Snyder posting a combined 9-under par between them.”

Parker raced up the leaderboard Tuesday with a final round of 5-under-par 67, the lowest round of his career. The Augusta, Ga., native entered the round in a tie for 62nd after rounds of 76 and 77 on Monday. A junior, Parker got off to a hot start, birdying his opening hole, No. 10, before eagling No. 11, a 398-yard par 4. Parker would make the turn at 5-under-par and birdie Nos. 3 and 6 to get to 7-under-par on the day, but bogeyed Nos. 7 and 9 to finish with a 5-under-par 67.

Junior Joseph Barr fired a final round 6-over-par 78 to finish in a tie for 45th, sophomore Stephen Powers shot a 4-over-par 76 to finish in a tie for 54th, and sophomore Cody Martin shot a final round 2-over-par 74 to place in a tie for 60th.

In addition to the Wildcats, 14 other schools competed in the tournament, including host school South Alabama, Akron, Arkansas State, Illinois, Illinois State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis, Mercer, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi, Toledo, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

For the first time, the University of South Alabama Individual Tournament ran at the same time as the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. The USA Individual Tournament, which was held at the Magnolia Grove Falls Golf Course (par 71, 7,051 yards), closed out Tuesday with sophomore Matthew Anderson finishing in a tie for 10th after a final round 1-over-par 73. Senior Mads Kristensen finished 13th, freshmen Will Bishop and Todd McDaniel each finished in a tie for 14th, while junior Seth Blann finished in a tie for 26th.

Kentucky will compete again in two weeks at the USF Invitational at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Tampa, Fla., on March 4-6.
