LEXINGTON, Ky. – After carding 18 birdies Monday, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team sits in eighth place after day two of the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla. Kentucky shot a nine-over-par 297 in the second round at RedTail Golf Club, leaving it with a team score of 594 through 36 holes of play.
Sophomore Liz Breed led Kentucky, shooting a one-over-par 73 while sinking a team-high six birdies on the day. Junior Ashleigh Albrecht came into the second round tied for fifth before shooting a three-over-par 75. Albrecht, who posted four birdies Monday, currently sits tied for 21st heading into the final round of play Tuesday.
“Today was very similar to yesterday,” said UK head coach Golda Johansson Borst. “We played solid throughout and made a lot of birdies to make up for our bogeys”
Auburn joined Baylor atop the leaderboard after the Tigers shot a four-under-par 284 in the second round. Tulane sits seven strokes off the lead and in third place, while UCF and Augusta State round out of the top five.
Junior Heather Lott improved her score by two strokes in the second round, shooting a two-over-par 72 to sit tied for 52nd. Lott sunk four birdies, and is at six-over-par 150 on the tournament. Senior Ashlee Rose continued her consistent play with a three-over-par 75 in the second round. Rose is tied for 43rd at the event with a seven-over-par 149, which is the second-best score on the team.
With three birdies on the day, junior Betsie Johnson shot a four-over-par 76 and is tied for 61st. As an individual, junior Megan Moir shot a nine-over-par 81 Monday and will enter the final round tied for 91st.
For the second day in a row, play was delayed 30 minutes for frost. Temperatures would warm up with the high during the day reaching the mid-60s.
The final round of the UCF Challenge will begin Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. ET with a shotgun start. Albrecht will start from the sixth hole with Rose and Breed teeing off from the seventh. Lott and Johnson will both tee off from the eighth hole, while Moir will begin on the 18th.
“The girls are staying tough and grinding, but we need to eliminate our small mistakes and need to finish stronger,” said coach Borst.
