LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team (6-1, 0-0 SEC) picked up two wins on Saturday, beating the Winthrop Eagles 4-0, and winning the nightcap match-up with the Cincinnati Bearcats 7-0 at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center on Saturday night.
The Wildcats started the day off right, quickly taking over in doubles play. Freshman Stephanie Fox and sophomore Cece Witten paired up to take on Andressa Garcia and Camille Armrani. The dominant duo breezed through the match to take the, 8-0, victory.
Freshman Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff and sophomore Marni Venter also grabbed a doubles win for the Wildcats to take the doubles point for the team. The two also played a strong match, tallying an 8-3 final result.
In singles play, the Wildcats won three matches in straight sets to take the victory for the team. Per usual, Fox flew through her match, defeating Ekin Gunyasu, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Khristina Blajkevitch, in her first match back after facing a wrist injury, also recorded a win for the Cats. She took on Sandra Herrera, defeating her, 6-1, 6-3.
Junior Jessica Stiles brought home the win for the Cats. After a competitive first set, Stiles kicked it into high gear to take the second set 6-0, for a final result of 6-3, 6-0. With her victory, the Wildcats called the match at 4-0.
The nightcap started off with the Wildcats winning the doubles point again, taking two of the three matches. Fox and Witten won 8-1 in just 37 minutes, while Venter and Morin defeated Kristina Georgivena and Safiyya Ismail of UC 8-2.
Kentucky dominated singles play, winning every match played. Edmee Morin-Kougoucheff was the first Wildcat to pick up a singles win, with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Cincy’s Kristina Georgivena. Khristina Blajkevitch came back from losing a first-set tiebreaker to win in three sets 7-6 (5), 0-6, 6-3.
Other wins for the Wildcats came from Jessica Stiles, who won 6-4, 6-1 over UC’s No. 1 Jasmine Lee. Stephanie Fox defeated Safiyya Ismail 6-3, 6-1.
In No. 5 and No. 6 singles, Cece Witten and Misha Testerman both won their matches 6-1, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively.
UK won eight of the nine matches played in the nightcap.
Kentucky is next in action next Saturday, Feb. 18 in a doubleheader with Eastern Kentucky and Evansville. The EKU match will start at 10:00 a.m. ET, with the Cats and Purple Aces scheduled to dual at 6:00 p.m. ET.
