FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Led by strong performances in air rifle from Emily Holsopple and Katie Fretts, the Kentucky rifle team posted a 4691-4646 win over Alaska-Fairbanks, with UK concluding the fall season with an unbeaten record, on Sunday at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.
Kentucky (7-0) finished its fall portion of the schedule with an undefeated slate, posting wins over Ole Miss, Nebraska, Ohio State, Murray State, Memphis, Air Force and UAF. The Wildcats set a new NCAA record in the win over Memphis earlier in the year with a 4711 team score, breaking its own record of 4700 set in a winning effort at the 2010-11 NCAA Championships.
As part of its trip to Alaska, UK posted a 4684-4608 win over Air Force on Saturday at the Horton Rifle Range.
The Wildcats got a 592 in air rifle from Holsopple, with Fretts tallying a 588. Stacy Wheatley finished with a 585 and Heather Greathouse fired a 582 in air rifle. Ethan Settlemires had a 593 and Henri Junghanel had a 591 in air rifle.
In smallbore Junghanel charted a 585, with Settlemires firing a 582 and Wheatley a 572. Freshman Elijah Ellis added a 575 in smallbore, with Holsopple shooting a 584.
Kentucky will return to action after the fall semester concludes and following the holiday break. UK will travel to West Point, N.Y., to open the spring season, facing Army on Jan. 14, 2012. UK will face conference foes Army, West Virginia and N.C. State to finish the regular-season, in addition to a non-conference test against TCU. The Wildcats will host the NCAA Qualifier (Feb. 18, 2012), before traveling to Oxford, Miss., for the GARC Championships (Feb. 25-26, 2012).
