LEXINGTON, Ky. –  Quarterback Maxwell Smith has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week by the SEC Office in recognition of his performance in Saturday’s 30-13 victory over Ole Miss.

Smith completed 19 of 36 passes for 283 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Wildcat win, which marked his first collegiate start. His 283 passing yards set a school record for a true freshman (non-redshirt) quarterback.  The old record was 208 passing yards by Larry McCrimmon vs. Florida in 1978.

Smith, from Granada Hills, Calif., led the Wildcats to 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter as UK rallied from a 13-10 deficit at the end of three periods.  It marked the 14th time since 2006 that UK has come from behind to win in the fourth quarter.

This is the first SEC Freshman of the Week award by a UK player since Morgan Newton garnered the honor following the Wildcats’ win against Eastern Kentucky in 2009.
